WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL 2008 CHICAGO
Early event: 6-9pm
GOAt Program
CHANGING THE TUNE OF A NATION: MUSIC AS A POLITICAL FORCE
Music is a source of entertainment and personal inspiration, but can also carry a great deal of influential power in politics and national identity. From hip-hop artists in Africa and Iran, to the Muslim punk movement “Taqwacore,” to the rock songs and ballads that inspired supporters of Ukraine’s Orange Revolution, music has shown it can unite people in order to incite change. Even closer to home, the songs chosen to accompany U.S. presidential rallies say much about the relationship between music and politics. Join the The Chicago Council’s GOAt program as it brings together a panel of international musicians and experts to discuss just how songs can provoke people to work towards better futures for their nations and communities.
Please join the GOAt audience in welcoming the experts to the Sonotheque stage to discuss this important issue…

Baay Musa
(USA/Senegal | Senegalese Hip Hop)
Hailing from Senegal, Moussa Sall, better known as Baay Musa, is an artist hailing from Senegal. The musical traditions of Senegalese culture had a heavy influence him growing up, especially since his family and cousins were members of the famous Senegalese Afrobeat group Waflash. However out of of all of the musical styles that surrounded him, he felt the greatest connection with hip hop. He helped to found one of the most influential hardcore hip hop groups in the history of the scene in Senegal: Wageble, which translates into 'ghetto' in English. Moussa loves hip hop above all, and strongly believes in the importance of staying true to yourself, your people, your culture, your family, and your roots.

He moved to the United States in 2002 and has learned to weave substance in and out of music and still keep everyone moving.
