The making of a perfect mix of tunes is a hard thing to do. Impose rules of time, theme, location, era or ratio of drum to bass and it might be time to call in a professional. Empty Bottle Presents and Sonotheque – in conjunction with agent and deejay BRAD OWEN – have decided to throw down the ultimate mix gauntlet to friends in bands, our buddies who work for labels and magazines, those guys holding up the tail end of the bar at 1am on a Tuesday night - people we are pretty sure know their way around a pile of records. Each Monday night at Sonotheque, a new song soldier will head behind the decks to deliver one hundred tunes that convey everything from ‘struggles toward transcendence’ to ‘hits from the opium den’ to ‘songs about books’. We’ve only just begun coming up with rules to impose on our co-conspirators so the depths to which these ambassadors of genre will have to dig are still unknown. But if you’ve ever wanted to spend a night trying to figure out how to create a mix that goes from The MONOTONES’ “The Book of Love” to DREAM EVIL’S “The Book of Heavy Metal,” your answer might just be playing at Sonotheque.
